Resilient power for remote drilling: Centiel’s UPS at Nong Yao offshore field

The TSeven Shirley Mobile Offshore Production Unit (MOPU), an offshore oil and gas drilling platform, faced the critical challenge of maintaining uninterrupted power to its drilling process control equipment, including vital safety monitoring systems. This remote and floating platform required a highly reliable and efficient power solution in the Nong Yao offshore field in the Gulf of Thailand and operated by Valeura Energy. Any disruption could jeopardize safety and operational efficiency, so a robust power system was essential.

Solution

Centiel provided a bespoke power solution specifically designed to meet the unique requirements of the offshore platform. The system features Centiel’s modular UPS systems housed in separate racks to ensure redundancy and reliability. These UPS systems have
internet Modbus communication and a signal interface to the output distribution board.
The UPS’s modular design facilitates easy maintenance, with hot-swappable components allowing easy replacement and upgrades. The system is scalable for future power requirements, demonstrating its adaptability. A key feature of this solution is the 4-hour battery backup, which is housed in a specially designed Ex-proof room to ensure continuous power supply in challenging offshore conditions. This setup also includes a low-impedance output transformer, which eliminates ignition noise, smooths internal eddy currents and provides output isolation protection.

Impact

TImplementing Centiel’s UPS system has significantly enhanced the reliability and safety of operations aboard the TSeven Shirley MOPU. The modular design reduces downtime and simplifies installation and maintenance, a crucial factor given the platform’s
remote location. The UPS system ensures that safety monitoring systems remain operational, safeguarding personnel and equipment.
By preventing power disruptions, Centiel’s UPS solution contributes to smoother operations, potentially saving costs associated with downtime and boosting overall productivity. The system’s compact, high-efficiency design not only saves valuable space on the platform but also allows for quick delivery, even with customized configurations. This project exemplifies Centiel’s commitment to delivering tailored, high-performance power solutions in demanding environments, providing a positive outlook on the potential cost savings for clients.
